The quarterly project in the UK for Q3 2019 will be mapping solar power. We have already made good progress with the larger ground-based Solar Farms, but have only about 10k household rooftop installations mapped.

Rationale

Gregory Williams has compiled a tracking page based on cumulative installations of solar panels under the FIT scheme. The smallest unit of geography within this data is the lower super output area (a census category containing a more-or-less constant population or number of households). Numbers of FIT installations in a single LSOA range from 0 to perhaps a hundred or more. LSOAs with at least 50 installations in urban areas represent ones which are likely to enable us to improve the mapping of rooftop solar most quickly.

This task selects 9 contiguous LSOAs with such characteristics in the colliery village of Rossington (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rossington). The idea is for mappers to test out using tasking manager to map rooftop solar PV visible in aerial imagery available to OSM editing tools. I have deliberately not inspected imagery for Rossington so it may be very easy or hard to impossible to find solar PV. This is part of the testing. If successful, I will release larger selections of target LSOAs as the project develops,

Instructions

In the first instance map individual groups of rooftop solar panels as nodes using 'power=generator,generator:source=solar;generator:type=solar_photovoltaic_panel,generator:method=photovoltaic, generator:output:electricity=yes (or small_installation), location=roof'. If possible add the number of individual modules making up a panel with 'generator:solar:modules=*'. If panels on the same roof face different directions (e.g., E & W on a N-S oriented building, please use two nodes.

Optional tags are: source (for the imagery), and generator:orientation (either a point of the compass or degrees).

It also helps if the underlying building is mapped, but at this stage that should be regarded as optional.

iD is well suited to this task as it has a good preset for solar panel (lacking only location).
